A thyristor module works by applying a pulse current to a gate current, they will only turn on when a sustained current reaches a set level. To turn off thyristor module in a DC circuit, the gate current must be reduced below the holding current or reverse voltage has to be applied using a commutation circuit.
In an AC circuit, the pulse current has to be applied to the gate current whenever it is positive, because the gate current falls below the holding current and the thyristor turns off whenever the current alternates. One of the essential advantages of using a thyristor module compared to a discrete is the electrical isolation between the baseplate of the module and the parts subject to voltage, this makes possible the mount-down of any number of the same or different modules on a common heatsink.
Thyristor modules are frequently used in AC power control, rectification, static switch, and soft-starter applications.
IXYS are a world-leading manufacturer of power semiconductors, they manufacture a wide range of thyristors that are available in several topologies: thyristor modules (Single thyristors and dual thyristors) and discrete phase control thyristors ranging from 16A to 700A and a voltage range of 100V to 2200V. Some discretes are available in isolated packages, PCB mountable modules, screw terminal modules and water cooled modules are also available. GD Rectifiers is an official distributor for IXYS and IXYS UK Westcode, supplying their products to customers throughout the UK.
IXYS single and dual thyristor modules are single or dual-thyristor modules with 800V to 2200V repetitive peak reverse voltage and 18A to 700A average forward output current. These single and dual thyristor devices also feature 3000V isolation voltage, planar passivated chips, utilises DCB substrate technology and are UL recognised.
