Encapsulated Breakover Diode Modules
GD Rectifiers has recently developed a range of high voltage encapsulated breakover diodes, (HV-BOD units).
These devices were originally designed to protect series connected thyristors in HV applications, but can be applied equally to many other protection circuit designs.
In the example shown here, a string of six 6500vrrm devices are used in each arm of a direct-fired inverse connected thyristor voltage regulator circuit used for Soft Starting 11kV 10mW AC motors. The unit blocks up to 6400V at which point break-over occurs, preventing damage of individual devices on overvoltage with respect to Vrrm, and even more importantly protecting against damage to the entire HV series string.
