Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) are used to protect the electrical installation, which consists of the consumer unit, wiring and accessories, from electrical power surges known as transient overvoltages. Surge protectors are protective devices that safeguard electrical equipment against sudden spikes in voltage. These surge protection devices are available as standalone devices and can also come built into the equipment.
Surge protectors kick in and protect devices when the voltage goes beyond safe limits, blocking or diverting any excess to the ground. This protects devices from damage caused by surges. Voltage spikes can happen due to electrical faults or lightning strikes.
