Semiconductor obsolescence has become much more common in the last five years due to strong component demand emerging from the automotive and IoT industries. The strong demand and limited capacity means that manufacturers are having to prioritise larger cases that offer a wider voltage range and can be used across a wide range of applications and devices, in favour of the smaller packages that are not universal.

Today it is common for a manufacturer to cease production of a component after 12-18 months, this is usually to replace the part with a new technology and design to offer better performance.
